Debating whether to write or email the head baseball coach of your dream college? According to a survey conducted by the High School Baseball Web, almost twice as many coaches prefer being initially contacted by letter versus email. A personally written letter shows a more sincere effort than its electronic counterpart.

To make the letter-writing process a not-so-daunting task, the Baseball Web lays out some key guidelines on how to properly introduce yourself to a college coach.

1) Keep your letter short. You’ll have plenty of time to sell yourself later.
2) Make sure the letter includes your name, school and class, and that it expresses your interest in playing baseball for his program.
3) Don’t start the letter “Dear Coach.” Imagine how you’d feel if you received a letter addressed, “Dear Kid.” Check the team’s website to find the head coach’s name, and use it in your salutation.
4) Wrap up the letter by asking the coach to send you pertinent info about the school’s baseball program, academic guidelines and admissions procedures.
5) Attach a sheet that provides a snapshot of your accomplishments. Make sure to include your contact information, and your personal, academic and baseball credentials.
