Are you the only one in your crew who’s not heading for the beach this spring break? Don’t dwell on it; plan a trip of your own. Spring break is a great time for college visits.

“Determining which college or university to attend is probably one of the most important decisions a high school student has to make,” says Emily Dawson, assistant director of admission at the University of Miami. When you visit a college you’re interested in, you see the life of that school in action, especially if classes are in session. You get a good sense about the professors, students, dorm life, activities and even the food.

“Students usually tell me that the moment they stepped on a campus, they knew if it was right or wrong for them,” Dawson says.
