We all know that speed kills in athletics, but do you know what speed and other related words actually mean? If not, check out these definitions so you can better understand why and what you’re training.
Speed
Rapidity in moving, going, traveling, proceeding or performing
Full, maximum or optimum rate of motion
Example: When Reggie Bush is running at full speed, it seems like he’s going 50 mph.
“The number one thing is being explosive. We work on pushing ourselves down the field. The longer your strides are, the faster you’ll run, period.” Tom Shaw, Nike SPARQ Trainer
Velocity
The rate of speed at which something happens
The speed and direction of motion of any object
Example: The velocity of C.C. Sabathia’s pitches makes them nearly impossible to hitunless you’re waiting on his fastball.
“If you want power, the ability to push off and deliver a ball at a high velocity, you have to strengthen your lower body and have a strong group of core muscles.” Javair Gillett, Detroit Tigers strength and conditioning coach
Acceleration
Increase in speed or velocity
An increase in rate of change
Example: Chris Paul’s acceleration to the bucket is the best in the NBA.
“The majority of our training is acceleration. Great if someone has flat-out speed, but if he can’t burst and doesn’t have the quickness or power to explode, he’ll never reach his top-end speed.” Todd Durkin, Owner of Fitness Quest 10
