Knowing the proper training vernacular is key to understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing in the weight room. Below, we offer the correct spelling, pronunciation, definition and usage of STACK’s SAT words of the month.

Hypertrophy (hi-pûrtro-fee)
An increase in mass, girth and size of muscle to produce greater force on your opponents. Commitment to the weight room and use of strength exercises provided by STACK experts will lead to muscle hypertrophy (and new-found popularity).

Atrophy [at-trof-fee]
Loss of muscle tissue due to inactivity. Vegging on the couch in front of the TV after school will result in muscle atrophy (and lonely weekends).
