Most athletes enjoy some leisurely fun in the sun once their game or workout is over. But for 16-year-old pro surfer Courtney Conlogue, the post-activity cool down couldn’t be more opposite.

Conlogue, who has been surfing since she was four, trades in her wet suit and surfboard for a pair of running shoes and workout clothes. “Usually after I lose a heat I love to just go running, because it just gets all that anger and everything out of [my] mind,” she says.

Conlogue’s passion for surfing and running to cool down eventually washed ashore onto the sport of track and field. She participates in 400- and 800-meter races, pole vaulting and various relay events. Her training on the track has kept her in shape to carve the waves, and helped her quickly paddle her way up to being one of the top young female surfers in the world.
