If a college coach thinks you’re a top prospect, don’t be surprised if he comes knocking on your door for some face time. According to Dom Starsia, head lacrosse coach at the University of Virginia, home visits are all about getting to know a recruit’s character.

“You walk away with just impressions.” Starsia says. “These boys are going to be an important part of my life for four years, and I’m going be an important part of their lives for four years—and hopefully for a lifetime.”

Starsia watches how you interact with him to judge your interest in his school. “Don’t be yawning,” he says. “Act like you’re paying attention; make eye contact if you ask questions, which leads me to believe you’re listening. If you have a little sense of humor and you get some of my weak jokes, that leads me to believe we have a chance.”

While he’s sizing you up, do the same back. Home visits are your chance to see if you like the coach personally, and if you will get along on and off the field. All the while, be respectful and open-minded, and get personal.
